My View on the History of Disability

     After learning about history of disability, there are many main parts that stuck out to be quite absurd in today's time. In the Early 20th century, people with varying disabilities were seen as a waste of space. Their lives did not matter to the rest of the world, and they went by "out of sight, out of mind" mentality. Continuing throughout the years, legislations have been passed to treat people with disabilities as normal human beings with civil rights.       For me, the most significant part happened when Kennedy became president and all the strong willed women in his life fought for the  wrongs to be made right with the community of the disabled. It took a person in the so called 'spotlight' to finally be a voice, but the mothers of these children were the real voices fighting for their child's rights. Visual Reality

     I recently listened to “How Can Going Blind Give You Vision?” by Isaac Lidsky. I also read the article, “The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress, ” by Adam Rogers. After listening and reading about the brain, I continued to find myself pausing in awe of how the brain functions and processes things differently. Both the Ted Talk and article correlate by talking about vision and how the brain processes what we are seeing in front of us.        As the eyes and brain work together to process signals into an image, it usually has no problem with distinguishing colors. With the example of the gold/white or blue/black dress, it shows us how easily our minds can deceive us. Our eyes have adjusted to seeing in daylight, but there are so many different variations of daylight and what that might look like. Why Occupational Therapy?

       So, here is the big question: Why Occupational Therapy? Why did I choose it? The answer is simple but at the same time can be very complex. Most people dreamed of their goals when they were younger, but I would always jump from one career path to another. I have always found joy in helping others by volunteering my time with disabled children and older adults, but I never realized a career path existed that I would fully enjoy, like Occupational Therapy. Throughout my time working with these special people, one older man that had cerebral palsy sparked my interest. I was so amazed that he was able to perform so many tasks by himself with adaptive skills. I learned very quickly the need for caregivers of disabled children and adults by working with them at Vacation Bible School.
